Terminator

1991

There are so many wonderful, happy memories of life with Gram that it's hard to choose, but one event that jumps immediately to mind was our double bill of Terminator movies in the summer of 1991. I was 14 and spending the half term holiday at Gram and Grandad's revising for my forthcoming exams, something I did every single summer of senior school (though presumably intended as a way of making me knuckle down to work away from the distractions of my friends, this actually turned into a treat I looked forward to all year thanks to the fun times I always had with Gram and Grandad aside from the slog of revision). Gram suggested we could go to the cinema one afternoon to give me a break from revising. Terminator 2 had just come out and I was itching to see it but not sure if Gram would be keen. But as we all know, Gram was always up for trying things out and gamely agreed. As it was an afternoon screening there were only a handful of people in the cinema. Which turned out to be a good thing as Gram got SO into the movie, she literally screamed and jumped up out of her seat several times at the scary bits! We had a brilliant afternoon and not wanting to let it end there, on our way home Gram asked if I wanted to get the first film out on video so she could watch that too - and so we did! It was exactly the kind of spontaneous fun yet thoughtful gesture that so characterised Gram - and just thinking about it now is making me smile.
